ECHO 2024:
Yellow Peril Awareness Day

May 2024, London, Manchester

Our exhibition in 2024 was called 'Yellow Peril Awareness Day' with the intention of reframing 'Yellow Peril' - the derogatory term used against people of East and Southeast Asian heritage, and uncovering and uplifting hidden ESEA history in the UK.

The exhibition touched on a variety of topics across ESEA cultures, including a mention of the 6 Chinese survivors of the Titanic, which led to our 2025 exhibition exploring this topic in much deeper detail.

The in-person interactive exhibition also encouraged visitors to explore by various themes;

- Interconnected Islands: interwoven histories

- ESEA History in the UK: Space for Change

- Family Trees: ESEA history in the UK, dating back to the 1500s

- Hubs: What makes interwoven British culture?

The exhibition was brought together by 60 volunteers based in the UK, America and Malaysia, and received over 140 visitors across London and Manchester.

The exhibition text can be found below.
